課程概述 |
This course will involve an in-depth examination of the relationship between law and psychology. Students will gain an understanding of and evaluate the contribution of psychological theories and research to the criminal and civil justice system. Students will learn the psychology-law relationship through topics such as witness competency, criminal responsibility, malingering, false memory, child witnesses, family violence, risk assessment and expert testimony. This course will also include discussions of forensic psychology in relation to the judicial system and law in Taiwan. |

Students should be able to:
• Define the field of forensic psychology in terms of theory and research.
• Define and evaluate adults’ and children’s roles and involvement in legal context as witnesses, victims, and perpetrators.
• Identify, describe, and explain adults’ and children’s competence as witnesses and the testimony of adults and children.
• Relate and critically evaluate theories and research in cognitive, social, clinical and developmental psychology to legal issues.
• Understand, evaluate, and apply forensic psychological research.
• Understand and evaluate expert witness testimony.
• Demonstrate ability to analyze and critique theories and research in psychology and law.
• Master dialogue facilitation, brainstorming, and group process skills.
• Solidify writing and oral presentation skills.

Group research proposal |
30% |
Students will be divided into groups for this task. Each group will be expected to propose a research question pertaining to any topic in forensic psychology. Following approval by the instructor, students will be expected to propose and design a research project to address the research question they proposed. The proposal should include an introduction section, proposed methodology and analytic approach. Students will not be expected to carry out the study. Each group will be expected to present their research proposal to the rest of the class. Visual presentations are expected and each group member is expected to speak at the presentation. The length of each presentation will depend on the class size. |

Critical analysis of a journal article |
20% |
Students are required to review and critique a research article by commenting on individual sections of the paper (Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion). Students should draw from the material learnt in classes on research methods in this area, and from readings obtained from references in the article. The assignment should be 3-5 pages long. |
3. |
Three In-Class Discussion Reports |
30% |
Students will be expected to disseminate a research paper every two weeks. The research paper will be discussed in class. Write a full report on the issues discussed about a research paper. |
4. |
Film Commentary |
20% |
Comment on a film by discussing issues related to forensic psychology, research that supports your points, and your own perspectives. |
